The forecast for Mickle Fell had been good enough, but Halifax was under a weather warning for snow (which didn’t materialise beyond three very short snow storms) and we didn’t want to go out to find that we couldn’t get back up the hill to Ma-in-Law’s house, so we deferred until today. The decision on whether to head for Little Fell was one I’d agonised over before the walk but was one that we ultimately made quite easily once we had started the walk. There is IMO a better route up Mickle Fell than the official ones if you are so minded Starting from just east of Grains o' th' Beck follow the tracks first towards Fish Lake, and then west to Close House, before heading up to High Crag, onwards to the Trig Point, and round to the summit. The view was good though with the profile of Murton Pike looking particularly striking. The so-called 'county top' of Yorkshire is at Mickle Fell in the North Riding. I understand that permission is required (in theory), but that the two routes for which permission is given do not visit Little Fell. Mickle Fell itself proved to be a worthy objective. News For most of the route there was no path and there were sections, particularly around Hanging Seal, which had it not been so dry would have been extremely rough going. Mickle Fell lies within the Ministry of Defence Warcop Training Area and is only accessible on a limited number of weekends a year, when an access permit is required. Recent surveys have added two new 2000' tops to the Nuttalls list, Long Fell and Tinside Rigg, that I was keen to visit to maintain completion status. As the historical summit of my native county Mickle Fell has always been high on my list of hills to climb, unfortunately though it also happens to reside in the Ministry of Defence’s Warcop Range. The views from the summit were excellent amd thankfully the haze was much less in evidence than it had been for much of April. Find a forecast.
