And I'm so stoked to take one of my kids over to play at someone's house for an afternoon. In this first episode of a new series, Tim, Jon, and Carissa look at the most referenced passages in the Old Testament—a description of God’s character by God himself. Tim:    What's valuable about these, at least 27, but I know there's some more reuses of these verses is you get to actually see how the biblical authors themselves understood it. Carissa:    I was thinking about this. Tim:    Actually, that's a great observation, Carissa. What we're going to do is these two verses in Exodus, and we're going to talk about those. Jon:    Did he not just listen to his own statement? But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. So God tells him not to pray on behalf of the people. These are the most read and most quoted Bible verses, ranked by spiritual readers and devoted Christians. And he could take those words to the bank. So I don't know what it's like to believe in or be loyal to a God who you hope will favor you. But what he says is "great in power". The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies. This is what He calls the people to do in response. Jon:    Yes. Tim:    Slow to anger. But he throws in first, "Lord is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness." 100 Most Popular Bible Verses. Tim:    That's great. So not Exodus 34. Though the Bible is a religious text, it is also one of the most read and bought books in the world and has often been quoted in other forms of literature and media, including television, music, and movies. And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. There's detailed notes adapted from Tim's original notes that we curated, and it's a wonderful resource. Carissa:    Okay, good. You know what I mean? Return to the Lord your God because He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loyal love and relenting of doing harm or doing catastrophe.". Tim:    "Passionate" doesn't do the whole job. He says, "This is why I didn't want to go to the city of Nineveh because I know you have the soft spot for people, no matter who they are to turn to you, and you always forgive them.". 1hr 12m, –  So there he flips it. Because what he sees that locusts plague and a famine and he thinks this is all a result of covenant rebellion. It appears in a prayer of Moses in the book of Numbers after Israel decides not to enter the promised land. Tim:    Yes. Carissa points out how God promises to be consistent, yet given all of Israel’s rebellion and failure, he seems to more often fall on the side of mercy and compassion. If you look through these 27 that I have, and I think there's a few more, the vast majority quote from verse 6, from like the goodie parts that we like. The story of Jonah is taking place when Nineveh is at its peak in its heyday, as the capital of Assyrian Empire. The last thought here is about visiting iniquity generationally. I think it was a theology class. And rend your heart and not your garments. Carissa:    That's really interesting. Jon:    Cool. by Marie Telling. Tim:    Oh, this what you were talking about earlier? Let's go to Joel 2. Of course, you know which part of the Bible is near and dear to your heart. When you get in to the book of Jeremiah, he actually tells Jeremiah not to pray or intercede. But then it's also crucially important to remember it's aimed at a king of one of the most oppressive empires of the ancient world. You're a forgiver. There are many Bible passages that are memorable for a variety of reasons, and the passages on this list are among the most quotable, with which all Christians are likely familiar. The tension comes with how does God relate to people who constantly fail as His partners. But that's interesting to think about it from that angle, Jon, where from a modern communication standpoint, you end with the thing that you really want to make sure they take away for long term. But when we talk about these thousands that get loyal love, we're talking about thousands of generations who stays faithful to the covenant. And I think that's because the biblical authors are putting them out there as genuine tensions. And it may be that I didn't grow up as a polytheist. Here on the podcast, of course, is Tim. Tim points out an interesting counterexample in Jeremiah, where God tells Jeremiah not to pray for Israel. Tim:    Here, let me show you guys a couple of other times that these verses get requoted. He's already quoting from the positive half, which is interesting. I think sometimes when we think of iniquity or sin, we think of just doing something bad. Especially then if you interpret the quality of your life as a form of blessing or judgment. Tim shares a couple of closing conclusions. So that's intense. • Episode 1. Who does God say he is? The Least Popular Book?) Let's look at how it gets used in the Prophets. At least I think that the whole point of God giving Israel the terms of the covenant, and then here saying, this is how God will relate to you based on the covenant. In part four (40:50–end), Tim brings up the prophet Joel, who describes the consequences of Israel’s sins and implores them to come back to God. Carissa:    Sure. He's going to be exposed to something that's going to, I think, chip away his character, and actually make him a less generous person." It feels like, I love you, I love you. Jonah flips this over. Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in loyal love, and one who relents concerning evil.”. It's going to be awesome." For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. It's one of the most important statements in the Old Testament itself. So you're creating interactive exercises, questions, all this interactive scripture study stuff that goes along to make it a whole class. It's almost like the first half of the statement is about God's compassion and generosity. God’s covenant promise is ongoing; God is making a promise about the stability of his character toward all generations. In our modern use, jealousy has come to mean the same as envy, but qanna' describes the response when someone covenantally connected to you gives their allegiance and wellbeing to someone who will hurt them. So should (inaudible- 00:17:05) Some of them are really interesting. But his takeaway, even after quoting that God won't clear the guilty and visit iniquity of fathers on the children, his takeaway is "so forgive the people." Tim:    Yeah, totally. And like it's like a consistent thing you can depend on with God. So I'm doing some of that. And now being jealous is not a good thing. Especially because there's something about our cultural context. It's from the repurposing of these words in Jonah. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. I'm going to destroy them (00:19:00) and start over with a new people. Jesus used the psalmists’ words when… He was asked for a sign to show who He is (Ps 78:24, John 6:32-33) But to tee this off, Tim, one thing that you told me is that this is the most referenced verse in the Bible by biblical authors? And just like the last thought is the thought I want them...it becomes a central thought. When you're writing something out...and when I think of writing a memorable paragraph, I'm going to end with the thing that I want the listener to really go away with. John 3:16, failed to make this shared list, it still ranks as the most searched verse on the web. 1hr 2m, –  That's because the consistent depiction of allegiance to other gods is that it will degrade your humanity and lead Israel to death, specifically towards injustice and neglect of the poor. "You should not worship or serve them, for I the LORD your God, am I a passionate God." So 10 of the spies give a report that "hey, the promised land, it's awesome. Essentially he's asking God to be consistent by changing His decision to destroy the people and to forgive them. It's like more (00:27:00) digestible when he flips it. Tim:    Oh, it's not that hard. Because when you have a righteous intercessor, God listens. Compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abundant in loyal love and faithfulness. Tim:    So Exodus 24 ends with Moses going up the mountain to kind of seal the deal to tell God, like, "Yeah, the people are going to do it, we're going to do this, we're going to be your covenant people." But I'm sure because it is a really important...I mean, these verses are super important for understanding who Yahweh is because it's all about God revealing Himself and all His goodness to Moses. God identifies the disobedient as those who hate him and the obedient as those who love and obey him. The Hebrew Bible is my area of study. But I think it at least does a better job than jealousy because it will raise the question of like, "What does that mean?" Jon:    Thanks for listening to this episode of the BibleProject podcast. So big picture, just kind of some observations here. Carissa:    There's almost an element of compassion and passion. It's pretty famous story. Tim:    Doing calamity, yeah. Carissa:    Yeah, there's the clarification of the disposition of the people. Jon:    Where they're saying, "We're not going to go to where God wants us to go.". 54m, –  For many of us—I feel it too—we start to get a little uncomfortable. Numbers 14:17-19 57m, –  It's a promise of stability, of a predictability in God's response. Who does God say he is? This is right after the people of Nineveh turn to God, and God forgives the city and the people on the king of Nineveh. The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Old Testament. So the whole ancient world was rejoicing when Nineveh fell to the Babylonians. Tim:    Yeah, it is. So big picture, we're going to do five-word studies that are all come from one verse (00:06:00) in the book of Exodus, Exodus 34:6. Or what the feel will be of it. It's a really intense language of divine anger and recompense on one of the great tyrants of the ancient Near East. Tim:    Yeah, that's right. This hasn't happened too much with my kids yet, but I can already start to see as they're in our neighborhood school. He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? This is a very common way that the verses get used. What is the most important Bible verse? Carissa points out that God said he wouldn’t clear the guilty, yet Moses concludes that God should forgive. I don't know. (00:36:00) Also, the word "jealousy" introduces a layer of meaning that's not fully present with kanna. And now it says, "But he will visit the iniquity on the father's and the children." It seems like he would have just left off the second half and just quoted the first. Is that the right word for it? Or, possibly we hear others misquoting verses, they sound right in the moment, so we also begin spreading the misuse without taking the time to study the verse in its author-intended context. It probably had kind of this like slow morphing into it was very positive. And then the quotation. It's interesting. Here is a list of the 5 most misused and abused Bible verses: 1. Tim:    Mm hmm. We're going to start an entire series walking through these verses, and looking at the key vocabulary. Jon:    In English jealousy and envy become kind of synonymous. I want to dig into that more, but I'm just kind of knowing that we will interact, right? Then we're going to actually dig in deep to five attributes of God that we find in those. Jon:    And why not the fifth generation? 32 Of The Most Beautiful Bible Verses "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." And relenting of evil. Jon:    The most quoted verse by biblical authors in the Bible is Exodus 34:6-7. You know how John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son…” is the most quotable verse in the New Testament? Tim:    Say the right prayers. He's always the same. And maybe we can just kind of make some initial observations about it. Tim:    Totally. But I think we've touched on it. Most quoted books in the Bible. In part two (17:15–25:20), Tim brings up the next time Exodus 34:6-7 is referenced in the Hebrew Scriptures. Yeah, that's right. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. So the point is as the generations go by, as we go down the line in this long history of relationship, you can count on me being this way. A passage can be a single verse or group of verses or an entire chapter that tells a particular story or message. You know, God's reached the limit of His patience. Tim:    So he doesn't use that word (00:49:00) loyal love because He's never made a covenant promise to Assyria, but he is great and power, which means that he oversees the nations and Assyria's time is up. Forgive, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, just as you also have forgiven these people from Egypt even until now.". Jon:    So these are coming out in the fall. Jon:    Well, it's funny as I just wanted to reclaim the original meaning of jealous was my strategy, and I was voted down. In particular, we want to look at this tension that pops in this verse, how it starts with such a lovely and caring picture of God. That features in the book of Jonah. Well, then you won't. The website topverses.com recently ranked the verses of the Bible … Also, with us is Carissa Quinn. Or is this going to be for kids? It's just become our vernacular. And God will do that. And the question is, is that in fact what it means, that God will visit the consequences of my grandfather's sin but I'll be the one to suffer for it? It's a great way to study further. He prayed to the LORD and said, 'Please LORD, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Tim:    Yes, it is. It starts with "You shall not worship other gods or serve them." And he quotes the same words. So I like the word passionate more. It's like somehow he knows if I press on the mercy side of the scales, God will yield. So those are the kind of two main takeaways. We're going to talk about each attribute, and we're going to get to slow to anger. Want to read through the Bible this year? This actually, I think, is hugely significant. And the stuff about clearing the guilty is important. The narrative (00:45:00) doesn't say it, but the implication is because God was gracious and compassionate with him. But then it seemingly ends with a vindictive picture of God. But for the moment, Carissa, you're just naming this is the moment that Moses is in a cave up on Mount Sinai, and there's a divine storm cloud passing by because Moses asked to see God's glory. Tim:    I think it could have a more negative selfish meaning or it could have a more positive, other-centered meaning. So just kind of ends with this like, "Whoa, I guess (00:09:00) God is vengeful after all. Tim:    Yeah, I agree. Sheila on January 10, 2012 at 12:12 pm . Bill O'Reilly quoted it on Fox News; Don Lemon quoted it on CNN. Now return to the Lord your God, Jon:    I'm John Collins. So here it is. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, And that's what this poem is emphasizing. The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but He will by no means clear the guilty visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations. Carissa:    Right. Tim:    It is a good one. But what we wanted to do was actually make a video that introduces people to these verses and where they appear in context, because they are the most requested and cross-referenced verses within the Old Testament. That's a great observation. Carissa:    The better part...I'm just kidding. 1. So people have become really sensitive to this in the Old Testament in a way that when I talk to people from the older generation, they don't feel the problem here. With this huge number, it just goes to show how well-loved and heartwarming this Bible verse is. And so I'm jealous. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. In the book of Joel, he's watching a drought, which causes a famine in the land of Israel. The Bible's most misinterpreted, misused and misunderstood scripture verse is once again in the forefront of our public discourse. (00:44:00) "But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. The very next thing that is going to happen in the narrative, in Exodus 32:1 is where the story picks up. I think there's cultural reasons for that, our cultural setting, for why we start to squirm a little bit. I'm guessing our listeners have probably heard at least some of these lines before. Jonah 4:1-2 So we thought, "Let's make an intro video to a word study series." Love is patient, love is kind. Jon:    Can I ask you, Tim? Their own behavior matters for how (00:30:00) God responds to them. It was my main theology mentor and seminary (00:12:00) Prof. Gerry Breshears, who really put these two verses on my radar in a significant way. "I am a jealous God." I've become convinced that the English word jealousy communicates only part of what kanna is communicating. In future conversations, the group will unpack the elements of God’s character, including his anger. He's merciful and He's just which even verse 7 which is intense brings a degree of assurance, that I always know where I stand with Yahweh based on my own behavior and choices. The Most Famous Verse in the Bible. (00:25:00), Tim:    Ooh, this is important. Tim:    This is after Jonah. But the question is, are these tensions that God feels within Himself? Gracious, slow to anger, abounding with loyal love. This difference helps to clarify how God deals with future generations. I think jealousy in English for most English speakers has a self-oriented focus. (00:52:00) I don't know, a public kind of whistleblowing on abuse of power, and angry authority figures, and abuse. Because when these episodes go live on our podcast, who knows? (00:32:00). Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Jon:    If we go back to the original story, we haven't talked about the narrative yet, but He's angry. Another striking example comes up in the book of Jonah after the prophet preaches to Nineveh and the whole city turns to God. So we'll put the rest of these scripture references that requotes Exodus 3:6-7 from the show notes, if you want to geek out further. So Nahum writes (00:47:00) this poem to talk about how he believes Yahweh is the one behind the downfall of Nineveh. The Prophet Nahum does something interesting. So it just takes some reflection. That's a pretty intense. My main areas of research or the things that I'm really fascinated with all have to do with the literary artistry of Scripture. The next episode will unpack the narrative context of Exodus 34 and examine why God gives this description of himself. It gives me this picture of like that God knows He's a pushover. It's not about me as such. That I'm jealous for this, meaning I'm passionate to see... Jon:    Yeah. This is many, many years ago. No generation gets a free pass or no generation will be treated unjustly. Yeah, that's right. Jon:    I agree. And what should come is "in loyal love." If they believe in divine powers, they relate to divine powers in this way. Blue Telusma. Tim:    So kanna is a covenant term and it has to do with the passion that arises within you when you see somebody that you're covenantly connected to giving their allegiance and their well-being over to someone who will hurt them. 4 of the Most Misquoted Bible Verses 1. It'll be interesting. He doesn't like the Ninevites so much and he believes in God's character so much that He decides to take off. So we're talking about Exodus 34, and Tim and I are writing videos on some of the words used to describe God there. Jon:    Yeah. (NIV) Tim:    That's right. Tim:    Correct. Jon:    And that I can adjust to this idea of justice. #2 Matthew 6:33. This is how it's always going to be. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Jon:    What you're saying then is the whole bit about generations is just God clarifying, "This isn't just for you guys. Share. And that's this conversation that we're having right now. Tim:    For sure. –  Tim:    Yes, it is. Popular Bible Verses. Tim:    So for me, this has forced me to go back in and really understand divine anger in context, which is why we're going to dedicate a whole video to it. So you've forgiven us up till now, so do it again. The Lord is avenging and wrathful. The most intense forms of divine anger in the Bible are aimed at leaders of people, Israelite or non-Israelite, who abuse their positions of power. Tim:    What prompted God to say this about Himself to Moses in the first place? This is from chapter 1. But even in the midst of God's judgment, he knows that God has a soft spot for people who turned to him (00:43:00) in humility. Carissa:    I think what's harder for us in our modern context, is the responsiveness of God. But why the word passion? If all of these verses were to enter a popularity contest, which one would win? So he goes up, and the whole thing is, the people just said, "We'll accept these vows. Jon:    Well, that's the traditional meaning of the word jealous... Jon:    ...which it just doesn't really mean that anymore. In his anger, Jonah accuses God of having consistent character. Yeah. Though you said Biblical Studies as a whole. In other words, this idea of God being both compassionate and patient, just and visiting iniquity of fathers on the children and so on, that basic idea occurs for the first time in the Ten Commandments of Exodus. But He also wants me to know that (00:35:00) He has a consistency for how He's going to deal with us and that I can know that. It's two verses, 6 and 7. We're going to die." The most quoted verse in the Bible also speaks of the greatest good, the greatest action, the greatest need, the greatest example, the greatest sacrifice, the greatest invitation, the greatest response, the greatest horror and the greatest gift the world has ever seen. So I think that can give us a clue as to how the biblical authors themselves understood the significance of (00:17:00) this description of God's character. But it's just interesting to pay attention to. Carissa:    Okay, starting in verse 17. Carissa, you want to read it? ", Tim:    He's angry that God is this way towards other people that he doesn't like. Hi I’m Support Bot!
